The default: twice a year
For most single-family Bay Area homes with average tree cover, twice a year is the sweet spot. The two visits that matter most:
- Late fall (November–early December), after the deciduous trees have finished dropping.
- Late spring (April–May), after pollen season and before the dry summer.
When you need quarterly service
If your home is under redwoods, oaks, pines or eucalyptus — or if it sits below a neighbor's mature canopy — plan on four visits a year. Redwood needles and pine debris are notorious for packing downspouts solid in weeks, not months.
Why it isn't optional
Backed-up gutters push water under your shingles and against your fascia. In older Bay Area homes with wood-frame construction, that's how you get slow roof-deck rot that isn't visible until it's very expensive. Overflowing gutters also dump water at your foundation — the leading avoidable cause of drainage and cracking issues in this region.
The one thing DIY misses
